The S24 Ultra

Watch:The S24 Ultra scorched in furnace to check titanium quality vs iPhone 15 Pro Max

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The S24 Ultra has been put through a furnace to test the titanium on its body.
  • We learn the titanium grade and how much of it is used in the Samsung phone.
  • We also get a look at the various S24 Ultra components.

The S24 Ultra is equipped with a titanium frame that adds to its strength. Even the phone’s different colours are named like Titanium Grey and Titanium Green. So while Samsung highlights the use of titanium on its new flagship phone, techies online are going to test the claims. In his new video, Zack from JerryRigEverything has literally scorched the S24 Ultra in a furnace to see the amount of titanium in use and pitch it against the iPhone 15 Pro Max. He also checks for the grade of titanium Samsung has used. Here, take a look:

The S24 Ultra’s titanium extraction

  • Zack starts the video taking apart the phone’s back panel using a heat gun and a knife. Then, he removes several screws to take out the wireless charging coil. There is another small wireless charging strip on top of the S Pen slot for powering the same.
  • We also see the haptic vibration motor inside the speaker casing, the large vapour chamber, the fail-safe placement of the microphone hole next to the SIM card slot, the rear camera setup, and the motherboard. He easily detaches the 5,000mAh battery using the built-in pull tab.
  • After all of these components were removed, he got the remaining chassis tested using a Moxtek scanner to find out Samsung has used Grade 2 titanium.
  • Even before getting into the scorching segment, we learn that the titanium is present only in the exterior frame. Inside it is mostly aluminium. There is also plastic in between these two metallic layers.
  • Early on in the heat test, the plastic melts away and later the aluminium also drips to the furnace. Meanwhile, the titanium stays solid. Once the furnace cools down he salvages the titanium (still solid) and aluminium (which earlier liquified and now took the shape of a coin).

Finally, he gives his analysis of the test.

Which has the better titanium: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or Apple iPhone Pro Max?

As already mentioned, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra uses Grade 2 titanium whereas the iPhone 15 Pro Max has Grade 5 titanium.

Apple has fused aluminium with titanium using a custom solid-state diffusion process while Samsung holds together the titanium and aluminium using nub anchors. The plastic in between these two layers adds structure (not strength) and acts as an antenna line too.

Even though the thickness of the titanium frame is comparable, the Grade 5 titanium is about 4 times more costly. So, if Apple has used about $10 to $15 titanium, Samsung must have used $3 to $5 worth of titanium. So, in conclusion, he says titanium in the S24 Ultra doesn’t give as much strength as it does in the case of the iPhone.
