Xiaomi 14 series gets up to 16GB of additional storage space: here’s how

The Xiaomi 14 series launched in China last week. It features two phones in the series — Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. The new Xiaomi phones come with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, up to 120W fast charging, and the new HyperOS. There’s one more feature that gives additional storage space to the Xiaomi 14 series.

Xiaomi 14 series UltraSpace storage

Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro comes with up to 512GB of onboard storage but you can get up to 16GB of of additional space. So if you have the 256GB model, you can get 264GB of total storage space. This extra storage is actually reserved for Over-Provisioning (OP) that’s used to improve the performance and reliability of flash memory, according to a report by GizmoChina. In fact, there’s usually more than 266GB of UFS memory storage in smartphones for OP.

Xiaomi engineers managed to use this extra space by rewriting the HyperOS firmware but without compromising on the phone’s performance, the report added. This way an extra 8GB of storage space is made usable for the 256GB model, and 16GB for the 512GB model. 256GB and 512GB already seems like adequate storage space but additional memory can be useful too.

This UltraSpace storage feature is however available only on select models of the Xiaomi 14 series. So you can get it on the 256GB model of the Xiaomi 14 Pro, and on the 512GB model of the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. It isn’t clear why this feature is not available for the Xiaomi 14 256GB model.

The Xiaomi 14 series is currently available only in China. There’s no word on its global launch yet but the Xiaomi phones are expected to make it to other markets soon. Xiaomi 14 Ultra is also expected to launch globally as part of this series. The smartphone was recently spotted on the EEC certification website suggesting a global launch.
